Study 1: CREATION
Introduction We start this series of studies by going back to the first principles as contained in the Genesis creation story. This reminds us that God is creator, and brings out aspects of His character and the value of His creation. Another familiar passage, from John's gospel, brings Jesus into the picture right at the beginning of the universe.
Read Genesis 1:1-25
Note The idea of using this familiar passage is not to get into heated arguments about creation versus evolution. Putting aside the question of how God creates, we look at His qualities as creator, and what we might learn from His creation. This reading ends before the creation of people - that comes in the next session - so we can focus on the value of creation in itself. Remember also that this passage is pre-fall, and that the creation is now flawed.
Discuss
(1) Look at all the places where God says "Let..." and it happens. What strikes you about God's creativity? Think particularly about the connection between God's word and His action. Are they distinguishable?
(2) Count the times in this passage God says that what He has created is good. Considering that this was before people appeared on the scene, to what extent does creation have value in itself? Do you give it enough value yourself? Is it also possible to give creation too much value?
(3) On the fourth day we need a telescope to see what God created; on the fifth day we need a microscope. What does this say about (a) God's power and (b) God's love.
Read John 1:1-14
Note In this passage we see Jesus (the "Word") as being not only present before the creation of the world, but also an integral part of the creation process. It is also a great explanation of Jesus' incarnation and His place in the Trinity. We are told he was both "with God", implying distinctiveness from the Father, and "was God", implying that He was one with God. Study 3 deals with Jesus' role in more depth. The main point to draw from this passage now is that all persons of the Trinity were and are involved in creation.
Discuss
(4) The "Word" in verse 1 is usually taken to mean Jesus. From the rest of the passage, why do you think that is?
(5) What role did Jesus have in creation? What sort of relationship with the Father is implied here? As you discuss this, refer back to what you said in question one about God's word.
(6) So far we have not mentioned the Holy Spirit. Does the Holy Spirit also have a role in the creation process? (You might like to look back to Genesis 1:2)
(7) Many days have passed since the events described in Genesis, each requiring God's sustaining power. How does this affect the way you look at nature? God seems to enjoy creating; in what ways do you enjoy creation?
Meditate
(You may like to do this in a garden if possible.) Recall a favourite beauty spot and your experience of nature there. Think of three things you particularly enjoy about it. Revel in what God has made, leading on to....
Praise
For the beauty of the Earth
O Lord our God how majestic is your name
O worship the king
The peace of the Earth (Wild Goose)
You shall go out with joy
Pray
O God, our Creator,
Your kindness has brought us the gift of a new day.
Help us to leave yesterday,
And not to covet tomorrow,
But to accept the uniqueness of today.
