Saturday 20th June 2009- Energy, environment and woodland in Rye.
Dr. Mike Pepler is Technical Manager for The Ashden Awards for
sustainable energy, and is an expert in Peak Oil. Two years ago he and
his wife Tracy bought Chestnut Coppice, a wood that they are managing
sustainably. Mike and Tracy have recently moved into an ecohouse. We
will hear about many of these topics from Mike during the day. We are
meeting first at Rye Baptist Church. Bring sandwiches and suitable
clothing and footwear for the field trip. Drinks will be provided. The
day is FREE, but a collection will be taken to cover the hire of the
church hall and other expenses. PLEASE BOOK by 10th June at the latest
with Martin Hodson by email at info@sageoxford.org.uk
or by phone at 01844-291244. Please indicate how you are coming, and
how many spaces there are in your car. The train station in Rye is only
two minutes walk from the Baptist Church, but we need to make sure we
have enough cars to get everyone to the wood in one go. More Details

preparatory work:
Annual gas consumption
(preferably in KWh). Look back at your bills over the last year and add
the number of units for the whole year, (not the money) there should be
a figure somewhere in Kilowatt Hours KWh, if in doubt bring your last
years bills with you and we can look at it together.
Annual electricity consumption
(in KWh) this is easier as there are no other units distance you have
travelled over the last year by car, public transport (bus, train,
underground) boat, and for flights just remember all the destinations
over the last year, we have a calculation sheet for various destinations
Goods and Services
How much do you have left to spend of your net take-home salary or
pension after deducting your rent/ mortgage, tax, food, travel,
flights, giving: estimate how much money is left per week. We are

16th-20th August 2009- ‘EnviroArt’ Exhibition
– Mottisfont Abbey, Hampshire. National Trust historic house
set in atmospheric gardens and grounds in the River Test Valley.
* Former priory set in glorious landscaped grounds
* Walled gardens, home to the National Collection of old-fashioned roses
* Unusual drawing room decorated by Rex Whistler
* Interesting art collection donated by painter Derek Hill
* Tranquil park, woodland and riverside walks
This is a large estate on the River Test in Hampshire. There is an
active conservation programme on the estate featuring many issues of
importance. Hobbys breed on the estate as do Nightingales and a host of
less uncommon species. There is growing evidence that it is on a major
migration route for birds out of and into central England, and there is
some interest in setting up a ringing station on the estate. There are
also otters in the river, badgers deer etc in the woods. There is a
very important project to manage the chalk stream for wildlife
conservation and there is a profusion of botanical and entomological
delights based on local Ancient woodland that has existed since at
least the 13th Century and the riverine environment and water meadows.
The exhibition will include art inspired by and celebrating the estate
& local conservation. It is being organised by artist David Coleman
who created the A Rocha mural at St Margaret’s Church in Lewknor,
and will be part of the Hampshire ‘Open Studios’ trail.
Look out for a Sage

March 2010- Fairtrade Fortnight and "The Big Brew" This year's Fairtrade
Fortnight will focus on tea. The Fairtrade Foundation has provided some
excellent resources that explain more about Fairtrade in general and
the tea trade in particular. Traidcraft is also putting together
tea-focused resources. Once again, The Big Brew will be a focus of many
Fairtrade Fortnight activities. To join the "Big Brew," all you need to
do is register, hold an event at which Fairtrade refreshments are
served, and call it a "Big Brew". It can be as simple as a special
coffee break or something really elaborate like a village party. It's a
great way to promote Fair Trade and also extend hospitality and further
the mission of your church. For more information, go to the CCOW website.

Saturday 6th March 2010- Living Hope: Green Churches, Green Schools
A day conference for anyone connected with a church or school and
interested in how we carry out our mission in an age of environmental
change. The conference will feature a panel on "reasons for hope" with
leading theologians Dave Bookless, Paula Clifford, Sean McDonagh, and
Chris Sunderland, information on the wider context of climate change
(yes, we know that convincing people right now that large portions of
the earth are actually warmer than usual might be a bit tough!)
and workshops on everything from how you can save energy (and money) in
your church and home, how to answer questions about the science of
climate change, spirituality in an age of climate change, what the
outcome of Copenhagen really means, how churches are working with local
community groups to effect real change, how schools can become
"greener" and more. The conference is being held in church, school and
parish hall of Great Missenden in Bucks, where they have already
received grants to install different forms of alternative energy
sources and are working on sustainability. For more information, go to
