Global Costs, Global Solutions Workshop, led by Maranda St John Nicolle at the "Climate Change: How Christians Respond" conference
Maranda made three short presentations about Christian environmental initiatives in various parts of the world, each of which were followed by small groups discussions and feedback to the whole group (of about 50 people):
Europe: The European Christian Environmental Network (ECEN) has produced a number of useful resources, including suggestions for European Car Free Day (22 September), and a number of liturgical resources. These include “Seven days with St Francis”, exercises for daily life praxis, and recommendations for the liturgical year. Examples of action in specific countries include the Czech Republic, where 50 churches have installed solar panels, the Netherlands' “5% project”, which invites pastors and churches to sign up to commit themselves to reduce their energy use by 5%, and the Vaxjo diocese in Sweden, who have a scheme somewhat similar to Ecocongregation. (you can find out more about the work in Vaxjo diocese in Sage Words January 2004). Our group discussion highlighted the need for environmental concerns to be routinely included in the regular liturgy, worship & preaching, not just at special occasions.
USA: Examples of initiatives are the “What Would Jesus Drive?” campaign, run by the Evangelical Environmental Network, supported by its magazine, Creation Care. Another interesting initiative is run by CERES, an umbrella groups for church investors, who raise issues of “climate risk” with the companies they invest in.
Developing countries: These countries are forced to adapt to the effects of climate change rather than mitigate them as in the richer countries. The group discussions raised issues of global equity: we cannot expect poorer countries to forego the material benefits that we enjoy. Many societies in developing countries have much to teach us about simpler, less materialistic lifestyles.
