Transcription of the Monumental Inscriptions at SS Mary & John Churchyard

War graveOver a period of 18 months a team of volunteers, comprising members of Oxfordshire Family History Society and local residents, worked incredibly hard to transcribe the inscriptions on the gravestones in the churchyard. Amongst the more noteworthy monuments transcribed are those for Henry William Wilton Woodward and his family (tailor and outfitter who co-founded Shepherd & Woodward Ltd) and George Wilden Pieritz who was in turn a Rabbi, a Christian Missionary and a Parish Priest.  The central Calvary memorial commemorates Father Richard Meux Benson, 'founder of S.S.J.E., first vicar of this Parish', who is closely linked with the development of educational and social services in East Oxford. There are also composite memorials to members of the S.S.J.E. (Society of St John the Evangelist) who are widely known as the "Cowley Fathers", the Society of All Saints Sisters of the Poor, and the Sisterhood of the Holy Childhood. See also Tables of Memorials.
The complete transcript is published by the society, as part of their project to transcribe all the graveyards of Oxfordshire. The transcript is produced in printed form and as a CD ROM. This latter version includes colour photographs of every monument, in a format recently pioneered by the society. Copies of the transcript are held at the Centre for Oxfordshire Studies and the Oxfordshire Record Office and a printed copy is available at the church. In addition, copies are available for purchase from the society in the form of microfiche (from the printed version) and on CD ROM (price £6). Details can be found on their website: www.ofhs.org.uk
